Below are some of the most popular Friends packages. If you would like to become a Friend or have any other suggestion, we would be delighted to hear from you (friends@ulso.co.uk).
One of the most rewarding ways to support the orchestra is by sponsoring a chair. Each of the principal positions, including the leader, are available for sponsorship. All our sponsored players attend the receptions during the year, to which sponsors are invited, and a different player is featured in each of our newsletters.
Chair sponsorships are not just an investment in the work of the orchestra but also in the future of the musicians. Each and every member of the orchestra auditions for their place, a process which is highly competitive. The demands on a young musician’s time are enormous and being a member of ULSO is a significant commitment. Being part of the orchestra is hugely rewarding and an important part of their musical experience and training, but we are also well aware that this time could be spent teaching or working elsewhere.
Chair endowment is structured to include a bursary that goes directly to the musician to help fund their tuition. This help is vital to many young musicians faced with huge tuition fees but is also very valuable to the orchestra. These bursaries help attract the very finest players and helps them make a commitment to the orchestra that they might not otherwise be able to do.
For more information on Chair Sponsorships for our 2011/12 season, please contact the ULSO Friends Co-Ordinator Chan Ning Lee by email (friends@ulso.co.uk) or post (ULSO Friends, University of London Orchestra, University of London Union, Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HY)
ULSO’s Patrons support the orchestra through a donation of £1000 or more. This donation targets a particular area of the orchestra’s work, for example allowing us to tackle repertoire that is otherwise too expensive, or maintaining the percussion instruments and equipment that the orchestra owns.
There are also opportunities for Patrons to get involved with Special Projects.
By underwriting aspects of an ULSO concert, Patrons allow us to undertake projects to which we would otherwise be unable to commit. This might include the hire or purchase of particular repertoire, venue or soloists fees, or recording sessions.
Patrons enjoy all the same benefits as a Benefactor, as well as 2 free tickets to every ULSO-promoted concert. They are encouraged to get involved with the orchestra, attending wine receptions and meeting the musicians.
